For the new installation of supply lines for drinking water and gas in Koblenz, Energieversorgung Mittelrhein AG opted for pipeline crossing lines under the Rhine. The SLM® 3.0 protective casing pipe system was installed using the HDD method.

During drilling, the pipe string to be installed was pre-welded using the butt welding method. The SLM® 3.0 protective casing pipe system for damage-free installation can be welded without casing cut-back according to DVS. Due to space constraints, a pipe string had to be inserted into the bore channel in a 270° bend with a radius of approx. 30 m. Such tight bending radii are only possible due to the high flexibility of the PE material.
After completion of the work, all pressure tests were successfully carried out. Due to excellent construction planning and the exceptionally good cooperation of all companies involved in the project, the targeted time and cost schedule could be met.

Project description
Three New Pipeline Crossing Lines under the Rhine for Drinking Water and Gas Supply
Challenges
Challenging ground conditions exist under the Rhine, and small bending radii had to be considered. Furthermore, installation took place in a drinking water protection area.
Solution
Trenchless Pipe Installation using the HDD Method with a Polyethylene Protective Casing Pipe System
