Norderney: BorWin5 Grid Connection

Transmission system operator TenneT is building a 900 MW grid connection from the EnBW He Dreiht wind farm to the converter station in Garrel/Ost. The 320 kV direct current connection strengthens the German supply network. TenneT is building this direct current grid connection with egeplast protective pipes for high and extra-high voltage cables up to 525 kV.

Horizontal drilling protects natural space

In order to achieve the expansion targets for renewable energies in Germany, the connection of offshore wind farms to the supply network is of great importance. One of these offshore connections is BorWin5 – a 230 km long grid connection that connects the EnBW He Dreiht wind farm, north

of Borkum, with the extra-high voltage grid on land. The grid connection point is the Garrel substation in the Cloppenburg area. The submarine cable has a length of 110 km. The underground cable portion is 120 km. For the construction, an ARGE, consisting of the companies Matthäi, Beermann and Matthäi Wasserbau was commissioned by TenneT. The pipeline construction work is carried out by STRABAG on behalf of the ARGE. The offshore connection runs via the island of Norderney. In order to protect the sensitive Wadden Sea natural area and to ensure dike safety, TenneT has opted for horizontal drilling on the island. The high-temperature-resistant Macroduct High-T in 450 x 61.5 mm is used here. It is a protective pipe for high and extra-high voltage cables up to 525 kV, which has increased thermal stability to withstand the high thermal stresses. The combination of high flexibility and strength of the PERohres used offers optimal properties for the implementation of these horizontal drilling.

High demands

The bores for the HVDC (high-voltage direct current transmission) cable system are being implemented in three construction phases, each with two parallel
underpasses running next to each other. The first construction phase was successfully carried out in the summer months of 2019. Two pipe strings were drilled from the lighthouse to the Wadden Sea, each with a length of 950 m. The second construction phase will underpass the northern island area from the lighthouse to the north beach and will be built in the summer months of 2020. The length here is 1,280 m. The last section is 1,090 m long, runs from the Wadden Sea to Hilgenriedersiel, mainland, and is planned for 2021. In addition to the increased demands of working in the nature reserve, the short execution time window and the delivery logistics are further challenges. The construction window is open from July 15 to September 30.

Exact timing

“Due to the delivery via ferries and the limited storage space on the island, precisely timed delivery and a direct and unconventional
Contact with egeplast and short response times are an important success factor.
Close coordination has given us planning certainty. Reliability is an indispensable component under these conditions,” explains Thomas Schwindeler, Project Manager at STRABAG AG. A smooth delivery process is absolutely essential here. All necessary accessory components are supplied by egeplast as a system provider – including temperature-resistant electrofusion couplings in OD 450 and temperature-resistant stub flanges.
