SLA® in Norway: Rehabilitation of the Main Water Supply from Stavanger City Center to the Hundvåg District

To ensure the drinking water supply for the 14,000 residents of Stavanger’s Hundvåg district, rehabilitation of the main water supply became necessary. The city administration decided on the diffusion-tight egeplast Barrier Pipe SLA®. After the installation was originally planned using the pipe bursting method through an existing cast iron pipe, the plan had to be changed to open trench construction.

Challenging Ground Conditions

The main water pipeline runs from Stavanger city center to the Hundvåg district. For the rehabilitation, the pipeline – starting at the inlet structure at the quay in the west – was connected to the City of Stavanger’s existing underwater pipeline and then continued along Ulsnesveien. With the final 708 m, this important rehabilitation measure was completed with this section.

This project became a challenging construction measure primarily due to the demanding ground conditions, which were characterized by wall and building remnants. For this reason, the original plan had to be revised. Instead of installation using the pipe bursting method through the existing cast iron pipe d 450 mm, the entire pipeline had to be installed using open trench construction.

Requirement: Diffusion-Tight Pipelines

Since the city administration requires diffusion-tight pipelines for projects in a defined area below sea level, the decision was made here as well for egeplast Barrier Pipe SLA®, which has been used by the City of Stavanger for many years and has already proven itself in various projects. To ensure smooth operations and optimal installation, close cooperation with egeplast was relied upon.

Kine Homleid Johansen, Project Manager at Stavanger Municipality, values the high quality of training and service provided by egeplast: “The constant exchange and close cooperation in all project phases give us a secure feeling in our joint projects. We thank you for the good cooperation and would work with egeplast again at any time.”

Trial installations revealed that the ground conditions did not permit the pipe bursting method.
Sondre Dammen, Head of the NoDig Department at Steg Entreprenør, the construction company responsible for supplying and welding the pipes, draws a similar conclusion. After various pipe bursting projects in Norway and Sweden and many kilometers of installed egeplast pipes, he summarizes the cooperation as follows: “Our trust in egeplast is great and we are not only very satisfied with the service time and again, but above all with the great flexibility with which solutions are always found quickly.”
