SLA® in Norway: Rehabilitation of the Main Water Supply from Stavanger City Center to the Hundvåg District

To ensure the drinking water supply for the 14,000 residents of Stavanger’s Hundvåg district, the rehabilitation of the main water supply became necessary. The city administration opted for the diffusion-tight egeplast SLA® Barrier Pipe. Although the Installation was initially planned using the burstlining method through an existing cast iron pipe, a change to Open Trench Installation was required.

Challenging Ground Conditions

The main water pipeline runs from Stavanger city center to the Hundvåg district. For the rehabilitation, the pipeline – starting at the inlet structure on the quay in the west – was connected to the existing underwater pipeline of the city of Stavanger and then continued along Ulsnesveien. With the final 708 m, this important rehabilitation measure was completed with this section.

This project became a challenging construction measure, primarily due to the demanding ground conditions, which were characterized by remnants of walls and buildings. For this reason, the original planning had to be revised. Instead of an Installation using the burstlining method through the existing 450 mm cast iron pipe, the entire pipeline had to be installed using the Open Trench Installation method.

Requirement: Diffusion-tight Pipes

As diffusion-tight pipes are required by the city administration for projects in a defined area below sea level, the egeplast SLA® Barrier Pipe was chosen for this project as well. This pipe has been used by the city of Stavanger for many years and has proven its worth in various projects. To ensure a smooth process and optimal Installation, close cooperation with egeplast was established.

Kine Homleid Johansen, Project Manager in the municipality of Stavanger, appreciates the high quality of the training courses and the service provided by egeplast: “The constant exchange and close cooperation in all project phases give us a sense of security in the joint projects. We thank you for the good cooperation and would work with egeplast again at any time.”

Trial installations revealed that the ground conditions did not permit the burstlining method.
Sondre Dammen, Head of the NoDig Department at Steg Entreprenør, the construction company responsible for the delivery and welding of the pipes, draws a similar conclusion. After various burst lining projects in Norway and Sweden, and many kilometers of installed egeplast pipes, he summarizes the cooperation as follows: “Our trust in egeplast is great and we are not only very satisfied with the service, but above all with the great flexibility with which solutions are always found quickly.”
