Secure Wastewater Disposal Thanks to Leakage-Monitored Pressure Pipe

In Neckargerach, the decommissioning of the old wastewater treatment plant necessitated the construction of an almost 9 km long pressure pipeline to the Obrigheim wastewater treatment plant. egeplast egeSmart:Integrity DCS pipes were used for the implementation of this challenging undertaking.

Project description

Construction of a wastewater pressure pipe between the Neckargerach and Obrigheim sewage treatment plants

Challenges

Safe transport of wastewater through a drinking water protection zone II+III and a flood area; culverting of the Neckar River

Solution

Fully monitored egeSmart:Integrity DCS pipes + DCS pigging stations

Installation

Open construction and horizontal directional drilling

Pipe system

egeSmart: Integrity DCS

Project participants

Client: Municipality of Neckargerach
Planning: SAG Ingenieure
Installation: HLT Baugesellschaft Neckargerach

Fully monitored through drinking water protection zones

After it became clear that the continued operation of the Neckargerach wastewater treatment plant would only be possible in the long term after extensive structural measures, the connection of the municipality of Neckargerach to the Obrigheim wastewater treatment plant was decided. This was a challenging project, the core of which was the construction of a wastewater pressure pipeline between the two treatment plants. The particular challenge: The pressure pipeline had to be laid through a flood plain along the Neckar river and through water protection zones II+III (approx. 500 m).

The commissioned planning office SAG Ingenieure from Ulm relied on fully monitored egeplast egeSmart:Integrity DCS pipes for the safe diversion of wastewater, which were professionally installed by HLT Bau GmbH. The intelligent early warning system of these pipes offers two decisive advantages here: On the one hand, permanent leak monitoring allows for the documentation of damage-free installation, and on the other hand, potential damage can be detected and remedied early during the construction phase. This ensures safe wastewater disposal in the long term.

This is particularly important because the Installation was complex due to the specific conditions along the route. In addition to the open-cut construction method used for the majority of the route, horizontal directional drilling was performed on a total of seven sections to guide the pressure pipeline under various bodies of water. Given the challenging geology of these sections, an inspection for potential damage during the pulling-in process offered a significant advantage. This allows damage to be repaired cost-effectively, quickly, and without complications. Moreover, thanks to this technology, environmental damage is avoided not only during the construction phase but also permanently, as the system enables long-term monitoring and secure wastewater disposal.

Maintenance & cleaning

For easy maintenance and cleaning of the pipeline during operation, various egeSmart:Integrity DCS pigging stations, operable from ground level, were installed. These are operator-friendly, fast, clean, operable from ground level, and ensure the cleaning of the pipeline during operation. This keeps the flow rate of the pipeline unimpaired and ensures it can be operated economically from the outset and permanently.
