Renewing the water pipes for a government building in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region presented those responsible with particular challenges: a very tight schedule of just four weeks, severe space constraints, and freight transit times that could not be precisely predicted as an additional risk factor. With the egeplast egeLiner® in a custom-made dimension, installed using close-fit lining, the customer requirements could be met.
Special challenges & requirements
In total, two pipelines of 160 m each had to be rehabilitated. Due in particular to the space constraints, the egeplast egeLiner® was chosen. Another special feature of the project was the required pipe dimension. With a diameter of 145 mm, this does not correspond to any common standard. After modifications to the extrusion machines prior to production, this dimension was manufactured specifically for this project. Once the supposedly biggest hurdle had been overcome with the on-time delivery of the pipes – despite a volatile freight market – a reorder became necessary due to a measurement error on the customer side. The renewed, unavoidable freight transit times intensified the time pressure that characterised this project. Throughout the entire construction phase, the main water supply to the government building had to be shut off, which meant that the originally set deadline of four weeks could not be exceeded.
Four weeks after construction began, the new pipeline was commissioned.

Successful completion
Ultimately, good planning and communication between all project stakeholders ensured that all logistical and construction challenges could be overcome on schedule – not least thanks to an air-freight delivery. After successful insertion and subsequent reversion, the new pipe was disinfected and finally inspected and approved. Exactly four weeks after construction began, the new close-fit-lined water pipeline was commissioned.

egeLiner®
The pre-shaped egeLiner® is wound onto steel drums, tailored to the length of the section being renovated. This achieves a cross-sectional reduction of up to 40 percent, allowing long construction lengths to be delivered to the site.
Fundamentally, the folded egeLiner® pipe strives to equalize the stresses frozen in its wall and transform back into its round original shape — this is referred to as the reversion process, which causes the return to the original form (“memory effect”). This property makes the close-fit method highly efficient and ensures that, after successful Installation, the egeLiner® adheres closely to the inner wall of the old pipe and can be fully integrated into the existing pipeline network without restriction.
