Leakage-monitored Wastewater Pressure Pipeline at the Söse Dam

The new leakage-monitored wastewater pressure pipeline at the Söse Dam, intended to replace the old asbestos cement pipe, had to be routed through drinking water protection zones of classes I and II. Therefore, for the total 4,500 m new installation, the egeplast 3L Leak Control System, a 100% leakage-monitored pipe system, was used. The installation was largely carried out using the static burst lining method.

"For crossing drinking water protection zones of classes I and II, the 100% monitored 3L Leak Control was required."

Harzwasserwerke, as one of the largest water suppliers in Lower Saxony and operator of several dams in the Harz region, is also primarily responsible for the wastewater pipelines located near the dams. At the Söse Dam, an old asbestos cement pipe DN 200 now had to be replaced. The planned new construction of the leakage-monitored wastewater pressure pipeline at the Söse Dam was an ambitious undertaking primarily because the wastewater must be routed through drinking water protection zones of classes I and II. Accordingly, the use of 100% leakage-monitored shaft systems, such as valve chambers and ventilation shafts, was relied upon. The egeplast 3L Leak Control pipes, together with the corresponding shaft systems, were able to meet the high demands placed on the wastewater pipeline to be installed. A total of 4,500 m of pipeline was newly installed. The installation was carried out in sections: 3,800 m using the static burst lining method and 700 m using open-cut construction.

The construction period spanned over three years. To ensure the smooth execution of this complex construction project, several measurements were taken after the initial site briefing to continuously document a damage-free installation. Following final acceptance, the system could be put directly into operation to enable continuous monitoring.
