Innovative green project in Monaco: Individual egeplast solution for gigantic thalasso-thermal system
Already known as a pioneer of thalasso-thermal energy, Monaco has set new standards with its latest project to reduce CO2 emissions. Using a pipe system with a length of 1.4 km, seawater can be pumped up from a depth of 80 meters and used to operate air conditioning or heating systems — a complex project in many respects which also serves as a prime example of successful decarbonization. For a safe installation on the seabed, the egeplast egeXXL was used.
To implement this ambitious project, the Principality relied on the marine works company Trasomar as well as on egeplast egeXXL, supplied by local distributor Reseaux Export. The welding and preparation of the pipe sections was managed by 2A2M. The multitude of logistical and geographical features made the project a special challenge at every stage. A six months planning phase was followed by a three months implementation. In the first step, the 1.4 km pipe system was divided into four smaller parts to be handled, specifically: a start section and three further stages of 380 m each. Made of dozens of twelve m long egeXXL sticks, OD 1,600 mm, SDR 21, these sections were prepared in the port of Bregaillon. What followed was a spectacular transport by tugboat to Monaco.
The most delicate part, however, was connecting the flanges and lowering the completed 1,140-m section to the seabed. This involved an enormous logistical effort and, in addition to precise planning and implementation, was also dependent on suitable weather conditions. The lowering was achieved by filling with water from the land side. To prevent the pipes from bending, three parameters had to be carefully monitored during the process: volume of water injected, back pressure and tension. To move the final section, France’s most powerful rescue boat, L’Abeille Flandre, was involved in the operation.Daniel Scivoletto, Reseaux Export, underlined the high-quality partnership between the different actors involved: “This project was a success thanks to the great teamwork between the supplier, producer, welder and installer. Despite the difficult context related to the fallout of the Ukraine crisis, egeplast and Reseaux Export met all their commitments. With the combined expertise and experience of Trasomar and 2A2M, the project was completed while fully meeting the deadlines and quality requirements”.
