Sustainable Pipe Rehabilitation of Sewer Lines with egeLiner® Using the Close-Fit Method

New Product egeLiner® Sewer Liner

For the rehabilitation of old sewer pipes, the egeLiner® sewer liner offers a sustainable and economical solution. The egeLiner® sewer liner is installed trenchlessly using close-fit lining and ensures future-proof rehabilitation due to its permanently sealed, welded connections and long service life. The rehabilitation specialists at Max Bögl have completed a first reference project.

Pre-deformed polyethylene (PE) pipes represent an established method for close-fit rehabilitation. With the egeLiner® sewer liner, egeplast has now expanded its portfolio to include sewer pipes. Similar to pressure pipe applications, the method is based on the new PE pipe being pre-deformed and pulled into the sewer to be rehabilitated, and then, through heating and mechanical reversion, it is pressed against the inner wall of the old pipe. This creates a nearly gap-free bond (“close fit”) between the old and new pipes. Cross-sectional losses remain minimal, largely preserving the hydraulic capacity of the sewer.

The rehabilitation of wastewater sewers offers the following key advantages:

  • Ensuring impermeability against extraneous water infiltration and wastewater exfiltration
  • No root intrusion
  • Creation of a socketless, statically self-supporting pipe with the quality of a new Installation
  • Preservation of hydraulic capacity
  • Trenchless construction method with correspondingly minimal surface disruption
“This rehabilitation is a future-proof solution due to the excellent material properties and long service life of the egeLiner.”

Thus, pre-deformed polyethylene pipes offer a technically reliable and durable solution for the rehabilitation of wastewater sewers using the close-fit method. For optimal ease of inspection, the new egeLiner® sewer pipes are produced in a light color. This facilitates TV inspection and quality assurance during and after rehabilitation. A first reference project was realized together with our partner Max Bögl: In Clausthal-Zellerfeld, a DN 200 sewer line with a length of 215 m was successfully rehabilitated. Despite challenging conditions with confined spaces, multiple bends, and manholes, the pulling-in process went smoothly. After final inspection, the sewer could be put back into operation, and the inlets, which had been measured in advance using robotic technology, could be reopened.

A cross-sectional reduction of up to 40% compared to a circular pipe allows long construction lengths to be wound onto steel drums and delivered to the construction site. The length of the pre-deformed egeLiner® can be matched to the section to be rehabilitated, and the reduced cross-section facilitates pulling it into the sewer. For example, 250 m of DN 300 dimension can be manufactured, delivered, and installed in one continuous length.

Fundamentally, the folded egeLiner® pipe strives to equalize the stresses frozen in the pipe wall and transform back into its round original shape – this is known as the reversion process, which causes the return to the original shape (“memory effect”). This property makes the close-fit method so efficient and ensures that, after successful Installation, the egeLiner® lies tightly against the inner wall of the old pipe and can be fully integrated into the existing pipeline network.

Space-saving rehabilitation using the close-fit method

With 7,000 employees worldwide and a turnover of approximately 2.6 billion Euros, the Max Bögl Group is one of the leading construction and technology companies in Germany. The company stands for innovation, quality, and sustainability – in classic infrastructure construction, building construction, the energy transition, and the development of new mobility solutions such as the Transport System Bögl.
