For the installation of a new drinking water pipeline in Leiden, Netherlands, the water utility Dunea used a large-diameter pipe system that withstands a pressure of 16 bar. The special design of the egeXXL pipe system with an outer diameter of 1200 mm and a wall thickness of 109 mm was individually manufactured for this purpose and installed predominantly using the HDD method. A large drinking water pipeline had to be installed for the newly established Rijnlandroute, which serves as a connecting road between the A4 and A44 motorways in the west of the Netherlands. egeplast worked closely with distribution partner Conval to meet the requirements. As an expert in special solutions, egeplast then manufactured a customized large-diameter pipe in the dimension 1200 x 109.1 mm including fittings. This XXL drinking water pipeline withstands a pressure of 16 bar. This special solution with the thickest pipe wall in egeplast’s history weighs nearly 370 kg/m. The egeXXL large-diameter pipe system made of PE 100 with an outer diameter of 1200 mm, SDR11, has a total length of 492 m (41 pipes of 12 m each). In addition, individually welded fittings consisting of segment bends 15°, stub ends, and flanges (OD 1200 mm) were supplied. The installation was carried out by the main contractor and installer Baas predominantly using the HDD method along the tranquil Veenwatering river in Leiden and partly at a depth of 30 m under a tunnel. RKT Tholen was responsible for butt welding and the drilling was performed by Van Vulpen. The newly installed pipeline was connected to the existing cast iron pipeline and commissioned in December 2016.
