To ensure long-term drinking water supply, the municipal utilities of the city of Roth have launched the installation of a new interconnector drinking water pipeline from the water works of Roth. A rocky underground and narrow construction plot were only some of the challenges which needed to be overcome in this process. The client opted for the egeplast SLM® 3.0 pipe system, which was by and large installed via horizontal drilling.
“In view of the specifications the bulk of the pipeline was installed by applying the so-called directonal drilling method. One particular challenge was posed by the prevalent underground consisting of hard rock.”

Installation of an interconnector drinking water pipeline
In the Franconian city of Roth, the municipal utilities began to install a new interconnector drinking water pipeline measuring approx. 1,000 m in autumn 2024 within the framework of a comprehensive construction project. The new drinking water pipeline runs from the water works to the elevated tank no. I, contract section 2, in Roth. The purpose ofthe new interconnector drinking water pipeline is a long-term independent supply of safe drinking water.
The construction project is definitely complex, since for one thing, the course of the topsoil varies and for the other the substrate is partially gravelly, and an enormous percentage of it is also very rocky. On top of that, unfavorable weather conditions with low temperatures and exceptionally frequent and heavy rainfalls as well as high humidity presented additional challenges. This made professional work preparation, a well-structured project coordination and, last but not least, adequate experience of everyone involved all the more important. The client is Stadtwerke Roth, which appointed IB ITEC Ingenieure Kellermann GmbH from Nürnberg as their planning office. The components installed were egeplast SLM® 3.0 pipes supplied by Muffenrohr Neutraubling (distributor) and installed by PRO BAU Ingenieur- und Rohrleitungsbau GmbH from Passau (construction company).
Selected installation methods
“In view of the specifications on the part of various authorities such as private and public forestry as well as the locally available workspace widths of the forest lanes, the bulk of the pipeline was installed by applying the so-called directonal drilling method – approx. 800 m out of 1.000 m. One particular challenge was posed by the prevalent underground consisting of hard rock.“ Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Peter Obermeier, Site Manager from PRO BAU, Passau.
The challenges of installation
Another challenge were the cool temperatures at the construction site, most of which was located in a forest. Therefore, the welding parameters for the SLM® 3.0 were adapted to match the respective butt welding machine ahead of time to ensure a proper and technically sound implementation of the weldings.
Moreover, frequent precipitation made it difficult to access the site roads leading to the various pipe sections with construction machinery and with the drilling equipment weighing 21 tons. This obstacle, however, was also easily overcome thanks to precise planning and optimization of worksflows.
The new drinking water pipeline will be commissioned right after the completion of construction at the site in spring 2025.
