The new high voltage line, an underground cable, which is approx. 7 km long, will be protected with the help of the egeplast Power Protect cable protection pipe system, part of which was installed using horizontal directional drilling and the ploughing method.
The energy transition is entering the decisive phase. The federal political objective to generate a minimum of 80 percent of the German gross energy consumption from renewables by 2030, is becoming a benchmark of the societal, economic and industrial development in Germany – including the development of the electricity grid. A climate-neutral life and management requires an electricity grid which satisfies the requirements of the energy revolution: It must be able to collect and distribute the heavily fluctuating quantities of renewable energy generated across the surface area. In addition, it must meet the massively increasing demand for electricity and supply more than ever before. For the electricity grid operators this means that they will need to massively expand and modernize their grids in the years to come.
The largest regional distribution system operator in Bavaria is Bayernwerk Netz GmbH. It supplies a total number of around seven million people with energy and is very actively involved in the expansion of the electricity grid for the energy transition. Even now, the company is already distributing up to 70 percent of their electrical energy from renewable sources in the energy networks.
“With egeplast international GmbH, we managed to gain an experienced supplier of pipe systems for underground cable construction who supported us in timely construction of the cable run.”

New high voltage line distributes green electricity
One example for the network expansion in the high voltage grid is the construction of the new approx. 7 kilometre-long underground cable in the district of Kelheim in Lower Bavaria which connects the new Bachl transformer station to the high voltage grid. For the energy revolution in the region, this represents a decisive component, because the electricity generated there in photovoltaics systems massively surpasses the amount of electricity spent locally. Especially along the highway, there are many suitable surfaces, which is what made the region a pioneer for renewable energies. Via the new cable, the green electricity can be distributed in the surrounding areas.
The construction works for the power supply line have been going on since the beginning of 2023, the civil engineering works have been completed since August and the pipes are ready for the power cables to be pulled in. egeplast supplied Power Protect cable protection pipe systems made of PERT for this high voltage line.
Trenchless methods in sensitive areas
One of the challenges involved in the civil engineering works for this new high voltage line was that multiple construction methods were being used. In part, the pipes were installed using the open trench method. In order to cross under streets and particularly sensitive areas, Bayernwerk Netz GmbH applied horizontal directional drilling (executed by PFAFFINGER BEERMANN PB Drill- & Energietechnik GmbH). Along the majority of the pipe route, featuring approx. four kilometers in length, the pipes were installed into the ground using the ploughing method.
Pfaffinger Bau SE Department Manager of pipeline/grid construction, Florian Lippl, summed up the project on a positive note: “We wish to thank Bayernwerk Netz GmbH for placing their order for the construction of the underground cable route and will continue the co-operation established in previous projects with the level of quality and reliability they are used to.”
Pfaffinger Bau SE, headquartered in Passau, is a medium-sized company in the construction and industrial sector which was established in the year 1855 by the builder, Paul Pfaffinger, continues to be family-owned until the present, meanwhile by the fifth generation. The Pfaffinger group of companies has specialised strongly in renewable energies and alternative construction methods.
