New water supply for a government building in Hongkong – speedy rehabilitation under cramped spatial conditions thanks to the egeplast egeLiner®
Those in charge of an inevitable renewal of the water pipes supplying a government building of the Hongkong Special Administrative Region faced some special challenges: very tight timing of just four weeks maximum, severe space constraints, plus not fully predictable freight times constituting an additional risk factor. The egeplast egeLiner®, manufactured according to the customer’s specifications with regard to its dimension and installed by means of close-fit lining, allowed for meeting the customers requests.
Specific challenges & requirements
All in all, two pipelines measuring 160 meters each required rehabilitation. Mostly in view of the limited spatial conditions, the customer opted for the egeplast egeLiner®. Another particularity of the project consisted in the dimension of the envisioned pipe. With its 145-mm diameter, it did not reflect any common standard. After some modifications of the extrusion machines prior to production, this customized dimension was manufactured for this specific project. After the pipes had been delivered on time irrespective of the volatile freight market (which had seemed to be the biggest hurdle), a measurement error on the part of the client called for some reordering. The inevitably resulting additional freight times exacerbated the time pressure which had been characteristic for this project even more. After all, the main water supply to the government building needed to be cut off, which is why the originally scheduled four weeks could not be exceeded.
Four weeks after the beginning of the construction works, the new pipeline was commissioned.
Successful conclusion
Ultimately, good planning and communication between everyone involved in the project ensured that all logistical and constructional challenges could be managed in a timely manner – not least by means of delivery via air freight. Following its successful pulling in and the subsequent reversion, the new pipe was disinfected and underwent its final inspection and acceptance test. Exactly four weeks after the beginning of the construction works, the new pipeline, which had been installed using close-fit lining, was commissioned.
